Using a telephoto lens allowed me to create an optical illusion, making the hills appear as if they were stacked directly atop one another in a series of receding waves. He suddenly crossed the path no more than 30 feet from me. He showed no fear, I imagine he is used to heavy foot traffic as the park is popular.
