New Conservation Easement Protecting Sensitive Wildlife Habitat is the Largest in Organization’s History
Livermore, Calif. – August 5, 2025: Tri-Valley Conservancy (TVC) is proud to announce the successful completion of a landmark conservation easement in Doolan Canyon, permanently protecting 1,168 acres of biologically rich land between Livermore and Dublin. This easement marks the largest in TVC’s history and significantly expands the region’s preserved open space and wildlife habitat.
The newly established Doolan Canyon Conservation Bank easement adds to TVC’s previous conservation efforts in the Canyon, linking to an adjacent 178-acre easement secured in 2018. The now-connected 1,341-acre corridor provides high-quality habitat for threatened and endangered species including the California red-legged frog, California tiger salamander, and candidate species western burrowing owl. The land also supports seasonal wetlands, riparian corridors, and Cottonwood Creek, which flows through the property. As a legally-binding conservation easement, this land is protected from development of any kind, and the land must be managed to protect wildlife habitat, in perpetuity.
“This conservation easement is a victory for wildlife and the community,” said Rebecca Spector, Executive Director of Tri-Valley Conservancy. “Doolan Canyon has long been a priority for permanent protection by both TVC and the community, and this conservation bank, in addition to our previous conservation easement, ensures the area remains as open space, provides habitat for a variety of species, and is visually beautiful for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
TVC was first approached by Natural Resources Group in 2021 to serve as the easement holder. The effort was made possible through a partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Doolan Canyon Mitigation Associates, Inc. is the property owner and grantor of the conservation bank.
“This conservation easement is a key piece of the greenbelt buffer between Livermore and Dublin,” said Diana Roberts, Conservation Manager at TVC. “This boundary helps curb urban sprawl, preserves biological diversity, and supports the long-term sustainability goals of the region.”
The easement also holds cultural and historical importance. The land has been actively grazed for generations, a tradition that will continue under the terms of the land management plan. Sustainable grazing practices help support local wildlife and contribute to fire-resilient habitat management.
