Olive Growers Quality Alliance

Olive Growing Educational Series

 

 

Tri-Valley Conservancy invites you to attend session one of Olive Growers Quality Alliance.  The purpose of this series is to help growers improve the quality of their olives and olive oils.  Also, to help the growers market their product.

 

This first session will be a fact-finding session to determine the needs & issues to be addressed in future forums.  This series will be led by experts from both inside and outside the Livermore Valley Agricultural community.  This program will include five monthly evening sessions each year.

 

First Session will be Wednesday; February 13, 2008 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

You are invited, as a grower, to join us during the First Session to discuss what needs and issues should be addressed by these forums. Our panel for the first session is comprised of the following specialists:

 

          • Patty Darragh, Executive Director, California Olive Oil Council
          • Adam Englehardt – Operations Manager, Olivina Ranch
          • Nancy Ash, owner of Strictly Olive Oil (a consulting company specializing in olive oil product marketing and education)

As this first session is a needs assessment, there will be no charge.  All other sessions will have a fee of $10 to help cover cost of meeting materials.

Wine Analysis and Sensory Chemistry

      • Ph.D., Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry, University of California, Davis, CA
      • M.S., Food Science, University of California, Davis CA
      • B.S., Food Science, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE
      • Dr. Ebeler's research is focused in two major areas: The development and application of analytical chemistry techniques to study wine flavor chemistry and the physico-chemical interactions of flavors with nonvolatile wine components; and the elucidation of the chemical mechanisms for observed health effects of wine and wine components.
      • She has been invited to speak about wine flavor chemistry and health effects at a number of national and international meetings, and has organized and served as co-chair for special symposia on wine flavor chemistry at the national meetings of the American Chemical Society and the American Society of Enology and Viticulture.

      • Ph.D. in Applied Microbiology from Strathclyde University, Scotland
      • Taught at Massey University, New Zealand for 20 years and Indiana University for three years
      • Joined E & J Gallo Winery as a Senior Research Microbiologist for five years.
      • Research focus is wine microbiology with emphasis on wine yeast genetics and physiology, breeding of wine yeasts by selective hybridization for improved winemaking properties; manipulation of wine flavor by the use of different wine yeasts; the interaction of wine yeasts and bacteria; and real time monitoring of fermentation by flow cytometry.

Dr. W. Douglas Gubler – Plant Pathologist, UC Davis

      • Dr. Doug Gubler is an expert in grape diseases and at UC Davis leads numerous projects investigating grapevine diseases, including powdery mildew, soilborne diseases, Petri disease, Black Measles and Eutypa dieback and other canker diseases.
      • Dr. Gubler developed a risk assessment model for powdery mildew on grapes In 1998, Dr. Gubler was the recipient of the APS Excellence in Extension Award.
      • His specific work in vineyard diseases earned him the distinction of being knighted during a visit to France. Gubler's official French title is Chevalier- L'Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne, France.
      • In 2005, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Phytopathological Society-Pacific Division.

Techniques and effects of Pruning

      • Julio Gallo Director of the Viticulture and Enology Research Center
      • Chair of the Department of Viticulture and Enology at California State University, Fresno
      • Named the Chateau Ste Michelle Distinguished Professor of Viticulture in 1995-2000
      • His areas of research include the effects of mechanical pruning, irrigation management and drought on wine and juice grape growth, productivity and physiology including the effects of nutrition, harvest date, and pruning level.
      • Dr. Wample also served as 2005-2006 President of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture Board of Directors.
